Italo Calvino – Italian writer.

Born in Santiago de Las Vegas in Cuba in 1923. The family soon returned to Italy. He spent his childhood in San Remo, where received his secondary education. At the beginning of the Second World War interrupted training at the agricultural faculty in 1943 and joined the guerrilla movement. In 1945 he moved to Turin, where he worked with various newspapers. He became a member of the Communist Party.

Once again, the war went, but the Faculty of Philology. In 1947 he graduated from the University, defended his thesis on the works of Joseph Conrad, and began working in the Communist newspaper L’Unità.

If the mediation of friends-writers Cesare Pavese and Elio Vitorino Italo Calvino published his first book, “The trail of spider nests» (Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno) – neo-realist novel, based on his own guerrilla experience, and in 1949 – a collection of stories “The last comes Raven »(Ultimo viene il corvo). Both books were surrounded by neo-realism.

In this period comes and the book “On the banks of the Boys» (I giovani del Po), and the neo-realist proletarian according to subject matter, which is close to the prose of Cesare Pavese. In 1952 Italo Calvino departs from the socio-critical literature and devotes himself to fiction. Get out the work “Forked Viscount» (Il visconte dimezzato), «Baron in the Trees» (Il barone rampante) and “Non-existent Knight» (Il cavaliere inesistente), which make up a trilogy entitled “Our ancestors» (I nostri antenati). Trilogy depicts an allegorical image of modern man.

In 1956, Italo Calvino publishes the collection “The Italian fairy tale» (Fiabe Italiane). In 1963 there was a collection of stories for children “Marcovaldo or the Seasons in the city» (Marcovaldo, ovvero le stagioni in cittá).

In 1964, the writer comes to Paris, met with Roland Barthes and Claude Levi-Strauss, the scope of his interests include sociology, cosmology and semiotics. New interests and influence on his work: soon published a collection of short stories “Kosmokomicheskie History”(1965), and in 1969 – the novel”The Castle of crossed destinies» (Il castello dei destini incrociati). These, as well as the following, the works created under significant influence of fantasy and surrealism, “Invisible Cities» (Le cittá invisibili, 1972), “If on a winter’s night a traveler» (Se una notte d’inverno un viaggiatore, 1979).

In 1975, the writer became an honorary member of the American Academy of next year received Austrian State Prize for European Literature. In 1983 came a collection of “Palomar».

He died in Siena in 1985.
