Joseph Beuys (German. Joseph Beuys, May 12, 1921, Krefeld, Germany – January 23, 1986, Dusseldorf, Germany) – German painter, one of the leaders of post-modernism.

Joseph Beuys was born in Krefeld (North Rhine-Westphalia) May 12, 1921 in the family of a merchant. He spent his childhood in Kleve, near the Dutch border. During the Second World War he served in aviation. The beginning of his “personal mythology”where fact is inseparable from the character served as the winter 1943, when his plane was shot down over the Crimea. Frosty”Tartar Steppe”, and the melted fat and felt, by which the locals rescued him, retaining body heat, we determined the imagery of his future works. Returning to the operation, fought in Holland. In 1945 he was captured by the British. In 1947-1951 he studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, where his main mentor was sculptor E.Matare. The artist, in 1961 received the title of professor of the Dusseldorf Academy, he was fired in 1972 after with no accepted applicants to protest the “occupied”its secretariat. In 1978 a federal court found unlawful the dismissal, but Beuys is not accepted professors, trying to be as independent as possible from the state. In the wake of the Left Opposition, he published a manifesto on”social sculpture”(1978), expressing it anarcho-utopian principle of”direct democracy”, designed to replace the existing bureaucratic mechanisms amount of free artistic expressions of the will of individuals and groups. In 1983, he announced his candidacy in the elections to the Bundestag (the list of “green”), but was defeated. Beuys died in Düsseldorf on January 23, 1986. After the death of the master every museum of modern art sought to establish one of its art objects in the most prominent place of honor in the form of a memorial. The largest and at the same time the most characteristic of these memorials is a working unit in the Museum of Hesse in Darmstadt – a suite of rooms that reproduce the atmosphere boysovskoy workshop, full of symbolic pieces – from rolls of pressed felt petrified to sausages.

At the end of his work 1940-1950-ies dominated by “primitive”style, similar rock paintings and watercolor paintings lead pin depicting birds, elk, sheep and other animals. Studied sculpture in the spirit of expressionism V.Lembruka and Mathare, private orders fulfilled on tombstones. Experienced a profound impact R.Shteynera anthroposophy. In the first half of the 1960s it was one of the founders of the”Fluxus”or””, Fluxus particular species of performance art, it is most common in Germany. Bright speaker and educator in his artistic actions always turned to the audience with a peremptory propaganda energy gain a foothold in this period, and his iconic image (fedora, cape, fishing vest). Used for art objects shockingly unusual materials such as tallow, felt, and honey; archetypal, cross-cutting motive remained”fat corner,”as in the monumental, and in a chamber (stool fat, 1964, the Museum of Hesse, Darmstadt) variations. In these works stood out sharply sense of deadlock alienation of modern man from nature and attempt to enter it in the magicheski-“shaman” level.
