In 1971, Pinochet has taken up the post of commander of the garrison of Santiago, which was his first assignment in the government of national unity led by President Salvador Allende. In early November 1972 as deputy interior minister General Carlos Prats, he was the Acting Chief of the Land Forces. In August 1973 the military, led by Pinochet organized a provocation against General Prats. who, faithful to the Popular Unity government, unable to bear the harassment, he resigned from all his posts. Allende replaced him with General Pinochet. Carlos Prats wrote in his diary on August 23, 1973: “My career is over. Without exaggerating their role, I believe that my resignation – prelude to a coup d’etat and the greatest betrayal … Now only need to appoint a day of the coup … »

September 11, 1973 in Chile there was a military coup, one of the initiators of which was just A.Pinochet. It was not the usual type of revolt of the garrison, and a well-planned military operation, in the center of which was made combined attack using artillery, aircraft and infantry. The Presidential Palace was fired missiles. Military units were engaged all public and government agencies. Measures have been taken to ensure that impede performance of military units in support of the Popular Unity government. Officers refused to support the coup, were executed. During the coup government of the Popular Unity Salvador Allende was overthrown. Was formed by the military junta, which included: general A.Pinochet (the army), Admiral Jose Toribio Merino Castro (from the Navy), General Gustavo Leigh Guzman (from the BBC), and General Cesar Mendoza Duran (from the Carabinieri).

Volunteer in 1989, announced his resignation and held presidential elections. March 11, 1990 brought to power a democratic government headed by Patricio Aylwin. Pinochet stepped down as president, but remained commander of the ground forces and retained its influence in the political life of the country. The authority of Pinochet continued to fall. An opinion poll conducted in 1992 showed that he voted only 20 percent of respondents, Aylwin received 70 percent of the vote. There were problems at the general home and abroad. In 1991 he escaped his European tour because in the very beginning, when Pinochet was in the UK, none of the officials did not accept him. Meanwhile, the government continued to Aylwin to Pinochet’s neoliberal course of modernization of the country. The new president has repeatedly pointed out that the military dictatorship has left it to the government is not the best economic legacy: a high budget deficit, inflation, unemployment, low living standards. At the same time, it paid tribute to improvements in the economy, which has managed to achieve Pinochet.

In 1994, the office of President joined the Christian Democrat Eduardo Frei. During his reign the military, led by Pinochet still enjoyed considerable influence. One of the ministers in the government of Frei told the correspondent of “Chicago Tribune”: “To listen Pinochet and the military. They are very powerful and plays an important role “.In early 1998, Pinochet resigned from his post as commander of land forces, but remained in line with the constitution, a senator for life.

October 16, 1998, while being treated in the United Kingdom, was arrested at the request of Spain, accusing him of the murder of its citizens. After months of litigation Britain freed him from the persecution of the disease.

In early 2005, Pinochet was held back by the Supreme Court of Chile to justice for the killing of 119 dissidents, but the court acquitted him. In November 2005 he was put under house arrest on charges of tax evasion and forgery of documents. December 3, 2006, Pinochet suffered a heavy heart attack, on the same day due to the risk of life above it was committed ritual and sacrament of Extreme Unction. He died on 10 December 2006 in the hospital of Santiago. According to reports, his body was cremated, a state funeral and mourning was not (he had only military honors). After the death of the former dictator Chilean society was in a sense split: December 11, 2006 in Santiago, was marked by speeches crowded jubilant opponents of Pinochet on the one hand and least crowded memorial meeting of supporters of late – on the other.
